BRIGHTON LIONS HOUSING SOCIETY Registered office: Lions Gate, 95
Rowan Avenue, Hove, East Sussex, BN3 7JZ Ten years after its formation, Brighton Lions Club purchased a house and converted it into five flats for elderly persons. Impressed with the concept, an anonymous donor gave sufficient funds to erect a block of 12 flats for the elderly, which was opened by the Mayor of Brighton in 1968. The Club decided that management of the properties would best be handled by a separate limited company and Brighton Lions Housing Society Ltd was established although it was and still remains an integral part of the Club. 1972 saw the completion of a second block of flats - 18 this time - on a site adjacent to the first block, this further development being partially funded by the sale of the original house. The two blocks together are known as Lions Court. A few years later the Society had the opportunity to buy another plot of land at a substantial discount to the market price and six bungalows (Lions Gardens) were built in 1976. A very substantial mortgage was raised in 1992 to enable the Society to buy a partly built block of 36 flats in Westdene, Brighton. These were completed in 1993 and named Lions Dene (above). Included in the development is a doctors' surgery and a large residents' lounge which is used by the Club for its business meetings. A further block of 44 flats at Hangleton known as Lions Gate was officially opened by Dr Tai-Sup Lee, the Lions' International President, in April 2004. The Society now has 121 flats and 6 bungalows providing decent, affordable accommodation for more than 100 of Brighton's more mature residents. |
