SERVICE AND WELFARE ACTIVITIES

ONGOING SERVICE ACTIVITIES

A stock of large-print books is maintained for loan to retirement homes in the town for the benefit of residents who find it difficult to visit the lending libraries.

Members of the Club regularly attend a number of local retirement homes to run bingo sessions for the residents.

Used spectacles are collected and sent to another local Lions Club for onward transmission to France. Here they are graded before being sent to developing countries for re-use.  Spectacle collection points in Brighton are provided by SpecSavers in North Street, Vision Express in Western Road and Linwood Strong in London Road.  Spectacles can also be left at Cowley Drive Post Office in Woodingdean.

And, of course, we constantly raise money for our Golden Jubilee project, Leo House.

WELFARE ACTIVITIES

The Club has always raised funds for the benefit of charitable causes, mainly in our local community although some money is spent on overseas projects. Donations vary from a few pounds to commitments of ongoing support for thousands of pounds each year over a period. In this way, we regularly dispense between £30,000 and £50,000 during the course of a year.

During the year ended 30 June 2007, the following donations were made:

  • £7,950 to Martlets Hospice;
  • £5,000 to the WRVS Meals on Wheels service;
  • £4,062 to purchase defibrillators for doctors' surgeries etc (picture, right);
  • £2,654 to pay for outings for disadvantaged children to a zoo park and a pantomime;
  • £1,000 to the Sussex air ambulance appeal;
  • £1,000 to Downsview School;
  • numerous further small donations & purchases.
